About this deal

As a mathematician and computer scientist, everything is deterministic and logical. Humans are not. I could say hello to someone on two different days and get two completely different responses based on what else is going on in their lives. As a leader, that’s a tough thing for me to try and understand – how to build a culture that allows different types of people to thrive. How do you deal with failure and adversity? What do you think companies can do to support to progress the careers of women working in technology?

Online booking for Royal Institution events is run by a third-party service, Eventbrite ( www.eventbrite.co.uk). Join OIT London for our monthly after-work networking event, hosted the first Wednesday of every month at Freedom Bar in Soho. We can’t be as arrogant as we have been up until this point – knowing computer science doesn’t mean you know the scenarios that it’s being applied in. This isn’t just deterministic, in a vacuum, this is affecting real lives. It’s important for computer scientists to be wise about the roll-out of these technologies, rather than getting caught up in the technology and excitement of being a computer scientist. What are the decisions we can make today to make sure we leave a legacy we are proud of tomorrow? You have a unique and aspirational story. Do you ever get moments of self-doubt? All children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult while in the theatre. The Royal Institution reserves the right to refuse admission to an unaccompanied child under the age of 13. A recognised and respected thought-leader, Anne-Marie is the temporary Arithmetician on Channel 4’s Countdown, the world’s longest running game show and hosts the highly popular Women Tech Charge podcast. Her latest book She’s In CTRL was published by Transworld in September 2022.

How did the opportunity for you to start Stemettes come about?

The Weekend" contains elements of " Set the Mood (Prelude)", written by Justin Timberlake, Timothy Mosley and Floyd Hills and performed by Justin Timberlake. One thing I think often goes missing in the narrative about getting people into tech, is that you don’t have to be able to code. We need everybody to have their own appreciation or understanding of tech, so that we can collectively make decisions that work for the greater good, rather than making technical decisions, assumptions or prioritizations that are incredibly narrow in scope, experience, perspective, and then demographic. If we only work with the few, it will end up harming the many. Is pushing people and technologies in the right direction about government legislation? Whether it’s the future of work, whether it’s diversity, history – people are saying, ‘Wow, I didn’t know any of that.’ I was getting frustrated that so many of the problems that we’re trying to deal with in this space come from the fact that a lot of folks don’t have an appreciation. These conversations aren’t part of our social norms. So, I wanted to boil all that down into a book because I can enable people to engage with this, understand it, make practical changes in the Getting Started sections. If I can share what I know with others, that might have an impact not just on those folks attending events, but parents, would-be volunteers . . . That was the impetus behind the book. I’d advise having a ‘Plan A’, so you know what direction you’re heading, but also to be open to new information so you can update it and build a new ‘Plan B’.

It’s a hard fight, but it’s the good fight. And if you hit a wall, you need to make a door. On the whole, however, it is an ultra-accessible book which makes an effective case for tech literacy and engagement for all. It will have the greatest impact among readers not already engaged with the tech world, and would make a good gift for a young daughter – or indeed an elderly mother.

Stemettes turned ten so there’s been a lot of celebrations! We’ve had a festival in Newcastle, we’ve got one coming up in London. There’ll be another one in Coventry later on in the year. I’ve done roundtables, also across London, Newcastle and Coventry, where Stemettes have been working for ten years. After studying at Oxford, I went to work in The City and was invited to speak at the largest women in tech conference in the world, the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. Why do so many of us - particularly women - feel the tech world is beyond reach? Women are woefully under-represented in tech - they represent roughly a mere quarter of the UK STEM workforce. This means an ever-increasing series of big decisions are made by a small number of people, mainly men. The IoT Tech Expo will showcase the most cutting-edge technologies from hundreds of exhibitors and provide insight from over 100+ speakers sharing their unparalleled industry knowledge and real-life experiences.
